“Morality, not legality, is the basis of justice.” – John Tucker (Tinley Park 5)
Tarik is a very young man doing time in Mississippi. He’s a good person that simply got off on the wrong foot in life. Tarik loves to read so Books to Prisoners and Portland ABC send him books periodically. He always sends us a thank you note and in one of them, he wrote this:
By three methods I am learning wisdom; First, by reflection, which is the noblest. Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the bitterest. No matter how busy I think I am, I must find time for reading, or surrender to ignorance. I live as if I were to die tomorrow and learn as if I were to live forever. I’ve discovered the best way to find myself is to lose myself in the service of others. Happiness comes when what you think, say and do are in harmony.“Just wanted to say—thank you so much all of you who have written to my son, Jonathan Martin. He was delighted to get some letters from you all. He told me he was going to write back. Thank you again for caring.”
